3's Broadband Zones (which is what we call our 3G network) are available in most parts of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra and the Gold Coast, and we reach areas covering 96% of Australians with Talk, SMS, MMS, IM and Email. You can check where 3's Broadband Zones and Roaming areas are by using our coverage checker for details about your area
We've introduced new 3G Roaming Zones, which cover areas outside our current 3G coverage. These, when combined with our regular Zones, deliver 3G and Mobile Broadband access to customers in more areas than ever before.
3G-network coverage area is called the 3 Broadband zone, which covers the greater metropolitan areas of most Australian capital cities. When in a 3 Broadband Zone, mobile phone customers will typically see a '3G' or '3' symbol displayed on their handset screen.
Mobile Broadband customers will see a 3G symbol displayed on the connection manager and should also notice the modem displaying a blue light.
When you’re outside 3’s Broadband Zone, we’ve introduced a new range of MEGA mobiles and modems that will give you 3G speeds even when you’re travelling out of town in our new 3G Roaming Zones.
Mobile phone customers will typically see an 'R' symbol or 'Roaming' on their handset screen and still have access to most 3G services, such as Planet 3, Mobile Internet and Video calling. In addition, customers may also see an “H”, “3G” or “3” symbol on their handset screen to indicate 3G speed.
Mobile Broadband customers will see ‘3G Roaming’ or 'EDGE Roaming' on the connection manager and the modem light will change to green / blue to highlight roaming on 2G / 3G. 3 modems have a default setting to our 3G Broadband Zone.
Outside 3’s Broadband Zone, customers can access 3’s 2G Zone, which covers the greater metropolitan areas of most Australian capital cities. When in 3’s 2G Zone, mobile phone customers will typically see a '2G' displayed on their handset screen - although this can vary for some devices.
Mobile Broadband customers will see a 2G symbol displayed on the connection manager and should also notice the modem displaying a blue light.
When outside these Broadband Zones, 3 customers roam (or start using) parts of Telstra's GSM(2G) Network.
Mobile phone customers will see an 'R' symbol or 'Roaming' on their handset screen and still have access to key services like talk, SMS, MMS, Messenger, email and My 3. However some services (like Mobile Internet & TV, music and games) will not be available.
Mobile Broadband customers will see an 'R' symbol or 'Roaming' on the connection manager and the modem will display a green light. 3 modems have a default setting to our 3G Broadband Zones. When outside these areas, settings will need to be manually changed. NB. Roaming connection speed will be slower with limited roaming data allowance. Additional roaming charges apply.
